Yang YUE is a multidisciplinary artist working between France and China. Her practice, which encompasses video, sound, and photography, investigates how social and economic structures shape subjectivity, perception, and memory.
Yue's work moves beyond a simplistic exploration of the human-nature relationship. Instead, she focuses on the process by which nature, once commodified, is gradually reduced to a sequence of signs. This accumulated process of symbolization is not a passive one; it actively produces a collective memory that shapes our common representations. In turn, this collective imagery acts upon the individual, who becomes alienated by these very signs, as if their identity were dissolving into a mirror of standardized representations.
Informed by critical theories of Marx, Lukács, and Bourdieu, her projects often document the environmental impact of industrialization, creating perceptual tensions through juxtapositions of body and machine, sound and space. Through visual narratives and spatial interventions, she explores ecological coexistence, cycles of destruction, and the political dimensions of contemporary landscapes. Her work aims to provoke both emotional and critical reflection, inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with environment, society, and established norms.
Yang YUE holds an MFA from MO.CO ESBA (Montpellier, France) and a BFA from the China Academy of Art (Hangzhou, China). Her work has been exhibited in China, France, UK and Swden.
My artistic practice, grounded in moving image and sound, investigates the entangled relationship between nature and human society. Through a poetic, non-linear narrative that oscillates between observation and abstraction, I reflect on the commodification of natural resources and how this process generates symbolic alienation and identity displacement within late capitalist systems.
Influenced by Jean Baudrillard’s theory of symbolic alienation, I juxtapose landscapes, industrial ruins, and human bodies to expose how nature—once a site of origin—is continuously re-coded, aestheticized, and reduced to signs. My visual language employs long takes, temporal loops, and spatial repetition to create a viscous temporality that invites the viewer to question the boundaries between the real and the constructed.
Inspired by David Lynch’s non-linear narrative logic, I deconstruct traditional chronology to build fragmented, layered perspectives. Sound in my work is not subservient to image but rather functions as an embodied presence—shifting between the concrete and the atmospheric—thereby intensifying emotional tension and spatial depth. This methodology allows me to construct poetic bridges between geopolitical realities and existential introspection.
